Definitions:
- Sample Tube: This is a test tube containing the water sample to which the test tablets will be added according to the appropriate test instructions. This tube is used to take the photometer reading. Sample tubes are glass and should never be placed into the pool to collect a sample.
- Blank Tube: A blank tube is a test tube filled with the water being tested only. It is important to use the actual water to be tested to provide a true comparison for the test results. A blank tube is needed before doing the tests for each pool and any time you use a dilute sample.
- In Range/Out of Range: Chemistry tests that are within the specified range on the pool log or outside of the specified range. Sites are to be alerted of any out of range tests before swimmers enter the water. Out of range can be represented as < less than / > greater than on the test unit.
Instructions:
- Press the power key, the instrument will display the ‘Choose a Test’ menu.

pH test: Press the [pH] key, press [OK], the following display will appear:
- Fill a test tube with water from the sample flow nozzle on the prominent unit, to the 10ml mark
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with clean tissue. Do not cap the tube
- Insert the tube, cover the tube with blue cap and press <OK> to blank the sample
- Once the instrument is done blanking, the display will now read <Insert sample>. Remove the test tube, add one ‘PHENOL RED’ pH Tablet. Use the crushing rod to crush and dissolve the tablet
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with a clean tissue. This step has to be done each and every time before inserting the test tube
- Insert the tube, cover the tube with the blue cap and press <OK> to read
- Once the instrument is done reading, record the reading in the pool log, remove the test tube, empty and rinse it
- Select <Choose a test> & press <OK>; this will bring you back to the test options menu. Or simply press the button for the next desired test to enter the menu.

Free Chlorine test: Press the [Cl2F ] key, press [OK]
- Fill a test tube with water from the sample flow nozzle on the prominent unit
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with clean tissue. Do not cap the tube
- Insert the tube, cover the tube with blue cap and press <OK> to blank the sample
- Once the instrument is done blanking, the display will now read <Insert sample>. Remove the test tube, add one ‘DPD No 1’ tablet, Use the crushing rod to crush and dissolve the tablet.
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with a clean tissue. This step has to be done each and every time before inserting the test tube
- Insert the tube, cover with the blue cap and press <OK> to read
- Once the instrument is done reading, record the reading in the pool log.
- Retain the test sample for use in the second part of the Chlorine test. Chlorine Total [Cl2T].
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with clean tissue. Do not cap the tube
- Total Chlorine test: Press the [Cl2T] key, press [OK]
- Add one ‘DPD No 3’ tablet,Use the crushing rod to crush and dissolve the tablet.
- This test has a 2 minute timer. Use the arrow key to highlight <Timer> press [OK], press [OK] again to start the countdown timer, select <Exit and Read>, press [OK].
- The reading will be taken automatically once the countdown is finished. Once the instrument is done reading, record the reading in the pool log, remove the test tube, empty and rinse it

Alkalinity Test (Afternoon Shift Only):
Alkalinity: Press the [Alk] key, press [OK]- Fill a test tube with water from the sample flow nozzle on the prominent unit, to the 10ml mark
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with clean tissue. Do not cap the tube, yet.
- Add one ‘ALKAPHOT’ tablet Use the crushing rod to crush and dissolve the tablet. Place the white cap on the test tube before the next step.
- Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the tube with a clean tissue. This step has to be done each and every time before inserting the test tube.
- This test has a 1 minute timer. Cover with the blue cap, use the arrow key to highlight <Timer> press [OK], press [OK] again to start the countdown timer, select <Exit and Read>, press [OK].
- The reading will be taken automatically once the countdown is finished. Once the instrument is done reading, record the reading in the pool log, remove the test tube, empty and rinse it
- Repeat steps for each pool. The machine will have to be blanked again (because it is different water!). Follow the directions again, but instead of the machine telling you to insert a blank, you will have to select blank by using the arrow keys. Once you have <blank> highlighted make sure your blank test tube is inserted before you press [OK].
