Initial Assessment

  1. Do a head-to-toe check of the victim for injuries. 
  2. Ask victim (if conscious) for any medical history and to describe signs and symptoms using S.A.M.P.L.E.
    • S: Signs/symptoms
    • A: Allergies to medications, food, environment
    • M: Medications the person is taking
    • P: Pertinent medical history
    • L: Last oral intake of water/ food
    • E: Events that may have lead to illness or injury
  3. Check
    • Head
    • Neck
    • Chest
    • Abdomen
    • Pelvis
    • All Four Limbs
  4. Check for D.O.T.S.
    • D: Deformities
    • O: Open injuries
    • T: Tenderness
    • S: Swelling
