Trainer

Trainee 

  • Use turtle kickboard while learning
  • Trainee will lead 1st half of the classes & the hippo exercise starting with the second class

Skills to Focus On

  • Class management for 1st half
  • Learn following skills in second half:
    • Wall Crawls
    • Backfloats
    • Rollovers
    • Return to Wall

Trainer

Trainee

First Class 

  • Have Trainee observe and prepare to start teaching in the next class

Observe

  • Lesson plan
  • Class flow, pace
  • Interact with corrections & why’s

Second Class

  • Trainee leads class for the 1st half of the class and the hippo exercise. 
  • Teach wall crawls and back-float holds
  • Discuss not forcing the backfloat - how to work slowly and calmly thru backfloats

Lead 1st half of the class for remainder of shift

  • Practice wall crawls leading into backfloats
  • Observe backfloats
    • Zen sweep into a backfloat
    • Secure hold - shoulder & head control
    • Spider hold - lightly cup child's head
    • Independent floats - shadow, tap

Third Class

  • Give feedback to Trainee on their teaching style.
  • Discuss when & why to use the different backfloat holds 

Practice Hand Holds for backfloats

  • Secure hold - shoulder & head control
  • Spider hold - lightly cup child's head
  • Independent floats - shadow, tap

Fourth Class

  • Safety Skills: teach rollovers and return to wall progressions
  • Focus on safety when students are jumping in

Observe 

  • Rollovers 
    • rollovers from step, wall
    • Jump in rollover 
  • Return to wall progression
    • From a sitting position
    • Jump in and return to wall

Fifth Class 

  • Rollovers and Return to Wall
  • Discuss when to introduce and use these skills

Practice 

  • Rollovers 
    • rollovers from step, wall
    • Jump in rollover 
  • Return to wall
    • From a sitting position
    • Jump in and return to wall

Remainder of the Shift

  • Before beginning a section of the lesson plan, ask the Trainee, “What skill set would you work on next?”
  • Continue with allowing the Trainee to practice hand holds - correct when necessary
  • Show and discuss ways to efficiently teach the different classes

 

  • Practice all hand holds
  • Answer “What’s next?” questions based on what you have learned about the lesson plan
  • Observe how Trainer teaches an efficient lesson

First Class

  • Encourage trainee to participate & learn songs
  • Step work weight bearing, waterfall progressions
  • Gather class zen sweep
  • Use turtle kickboard as your student
  • Learn “Wheels on the Bus” song

Second Class

  • Wall Work: paws on wall, toys, mirrors
  • Back-floating holds, TwinkleTwinkle song
  • Assist trainer as appropriate
  • Learn “London Bridge” song

Third Class

  • Core Work 
    • Prone hold
    • Sit on wall
  • Tummy Time on hippo
  • Observe and ask questions
  • Ask for additional training if you have a BS class on your new shift
