Skills to Focus On

  • The lesson plan: “What would you do next?”
  • Getting the class started
    • Water exploration
    • Introductions & FOW
  • Breath Control, Balance, Buoyancy
    • How & why?
    • Vertical & horizontal submersions

Trainer

Trainee

First Class 

  • Lead the entire class (including the songs)
  • Talk about gathering the class and demonstrate various ideas for water exploration & cup work
  • Introductions - loud and clear!
  • FOW: Explain how you will incorporate this into your lesson plan for the day. Structure of class may not look different, but parents are placing more focus on a certain skill

Observe (not responsible for songs in the first class)

Water Exploration

  • Step exploration & cup work (2 minutes)
  • Zen sweeps - vertical and horizontal

Introductions

  • Every class! Ask parent’s name, child’s name 

and age.

FOW : Today’s FOW will be included in every class - observe how it is adapted for different ages and levels.

Second Class

  • Trainee leads all songs & hippo exercise for remaining classes
  • Teach all horizontal submersions 
  • Focus on handholds, cues & the whys 
  • Tell the trainee what you are looking for as parents practice. Are their submersions successful? Are parents & kids confident? Nervous? Who needs help…demonstrate or talk about ways to approach

Practice Water Exploration

  • Cup work & zen sweeps 

Practice Hand Holds for horizontal submersions:

  • Zen sweeps - horizontal
  • Jellyfish floats
  • Flat belly submersions
  • Seat push glide to the wall

Third Class

  • Teach vertical submersions. Teach the whys & expectations - what do you want these skills to look like.
  • Explain how you change activities/drills in today's skills for different levels of Snappers 
  • Focus on handholds, cues & the whys. 
  • Tell trainee what are you are looking for as parents practice. Are their submersions successful? Are parents & kids confident? Nervous? Who needs help…demonstrate or talk about ways to approach.

Practice Hand Holds for vertical submersions

  • Zen Sweeps - Vertical 
  • Vertical Submersions/Elevators
  • Moonwalks if Appropriate for Level
  • Koala Dips - Link 3

Fourth Class

  • Ask trainee what they would correct in the submersion exercises?
  • Ask Trainee for some whys during submersions
  • Ask trainee “what’s next”

Observe parents for correct Hand Holds:

  • Zen Sweeps - Horizontal
  • Jellyfish Floats
  • Flat Belly Submersions
  • Seat Push Glide to the Wall

Fifth Class 

  • Ask trainee what they would correct in the submersion exercises?
  • Ask Trainee for some whys during submersions
  • Ask trainee “what’s next”

Observe parents for correct Hand Holds:

  • Zen Sweeps - Vertical 
  • Vertical Submersions/Elevators
  • Koala Dips - Link 3

Remainder of the Shift

  • Focus on the how and why’s with all of the skills that have been covered so far.
  • Ask the Trainee to summarize/articulate what they are seeing and doing with each skill.
  • Ask them what and how they would correct a handhold that is not appropriate for teaching one of the skills in today’s list.

Learn to identify what to fix and how to fix the skills on today's list:

  • Moving Too Quickly On Zen Sweeps
  • Not Completely Submerging A Swimmer On A Seat Push Glide To The Wall
  • Heavy Hands On Elevators, Not Releasing The Swimmer On The Way Up.

  • Back-floating holds, TwinkleTwinkle song
  • Assist trainer as appropriate
  • Learn “London Bridge” song

Third Class

  • Core Work 
    • Prone hold
    • Sit on wall
  • Tummy Time on hippo
  • Observe and ask questions
  • Ask for additional training if you have a BS class on your new shift
