MILD BLOCKAGE
Victim can speak, cough, gag. Encourage patron to cough forcibly.
SEVERE BLOCKAGE - FIRST AID
- Assess person: Are you choking? Nods yes. Activate EMS, get AED
- Position yourself; stand behind victim with one of your legs between the patron’s for support if the patron should go unconscious. For a child, you may need to kneel behind them.
- Make a fist with one hand and place thumb side against abdomen, just above navel and below ribs; grasp fist with other hand.
- Give thrust; INWARD and UPWARD
- Continue until the object is expelled or victim becomes unresponsive.
- If victim becomes Unresponsive, lower him/ her to the ground.
- Begin CPR starting with compressions; Utilize AED if available.
- Check mouth for object prior to giving breaths; If you see object, attempt to safely remove.
- Continue CPR cycle, rechecking pulse every two minutes.
