The Hubbard Way - FAQs

How does a Baby Splash class work?

Baby Splash is a water acclimation class for babies ages 2 to 5 months that meets once a week for a half hour. A caregiver gets in the water with their baby and we focus on getting babies and adults comfortable in the water. We'll teach you different activities to take home with you to use in the tub or backyard pool... the water provides a unique environment which allows children to move in ways they cannot yet on land which helps with muscle development. We work on a ton of skills in the water, including backfloats, hand placement, body position for babies and developmental activities like tummy time, weight bearing, tracking of the eyes and fine and gross motor skills such as grasping and reaching for toys, and sweeps through the water. It's a fun class to bond with the child and it's a great time for socialization for parents as well as babies. The skills you are taught can be practiced at home in the bath tub as well. Our exercises teach the babies to trust the water - we allow them to float freely and comfortably, to kick, splash and move in the water; to feel their buoyancy and balance in a warm and comforting environment. The focus of the class is:

Introduction to water safety skills

Child bonding

Water acclimation

Comfort and balance in the water

What if the swimmer is a preemie enrolled in Baby Splash?

We cannot give advice on an appropriate start date because we do not know the health history or the prematurity course of their child. We recommend asking your pediatrician. Premies are welcome to stay in Baby Slash until they are "developmentally" 6 months as we do not want babies in Little Snapper 1 that should not be submerging quite yet.

Corrected age, or adjusted age, is the premature baby’s chronological age minus the number of weeks or months early they were born. For example, a 1-year-old who was born 3 months early would have a corrected age of 9 months.

Action Needed: Site (or Support) will add a critical student note Subject/Comment: Preemie: Current age is x weeks/months & adjusted age x weeks/months. This will prevent us from dropping the swimmer at 6 months old during the normal procedure and allow us to submit the appropriate drop date based on their adjusted age. Do NOT submit the drop date. Allow the process the notify them 1-2 weeks before their last Baby Splash class. Remember the notice they receive has information how to sign up for the next level to start within the next 14 days.
